(?) Phyllis Owen-Jones Set XXI (1922-1925)

Scope and Content

Black leather album with 'B.P.T.C. 21st Set 1922-1925' embossed on front cover containing 127 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life and enjoying various social activities for the years circa 1923-1925. It is believed that the album was created by a member of Set XXI as it contains several images which do not relate directly to the College. In particular, the inclusion of photographs taken in South Africa suggest that the album may have been created by Phyllis Owen-Jones whose first teaching post was in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The images have captions but only a handful of individuals are named.

Scenes from College life include the following: students swimming in the Commercial Road Swimming Baths, engaged in displays of country dancing, Revived Greek Dance and gymnastics – most likely for Demonstration Day 1923; picnics and swimming in the river Great Ouse, tea parties in the garden and excursions to Margaret Stansfeld's cottage at Pavenham and its replacement at Aspley Heath, Bedfordshire; students dressed in theatrical costume performing an entertainment; group photograph of Set XXI, the cricket, hockey, lacrosse and netball teams; 3 Lansdowne Road: the front and rear exterior, the interior of a student common room; children participating in physical education lessons at Goldington Road School and Harpur Street School; scenes from a Folk Dance competition held at Lilford Hall, Northamptonshire at which the College competed and the College Sports Day featuring the 'Dressing Race' and 'Hobble & Poodle Race'. The album also contains photographs of a South Africa v. England cricket match during a tour of England in the 1924 season accompanied by a manuscript note signed by members of the South African team.
