Aileen Carr Set XVIII student (1919-1922) & tutor (1923-1930)

Scope and Content

Brown ribbed paper album with 'Photos' embossed on cover. The album belonged to Aileen Carr of Set XVIII who became a member of staff in 1923 until her marriage in 1930. The album contains 161 photographs and is predominantly of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1919-1920 but also contains personal photographs of holidays, hockey matches and of students and staff at St. Thomas' Hospital, London, where Aileen Carr undertook further training in Massage, Medical Gymnastics and Electricity following completion of her studies at Bedford.

Many of the images have captions describing places, occasions, naming individuals and dates. Several students from Sets XVI and XVIII are identified together with several staff including the groundsman Mr Mansfield, tutors Miss Chamberlain, Freda Colwill, Miss E. Johansson, Molly Petit, Salome Wynyard and the Principal Margaret Stansfeld.

Scenes from College life include the following: students swimming at Newnham Baths, playing hockey against named teams (including an Officers team from Elstow, Bedfordshire), demonstrating gymnastics, displays of country dancing and Revived Greek Dance on Demonstration Day 1920; 1st XI and Set XVIII hockey teams, lacrosse team; various 'Sets' of students; students wearing clinic overalls; exterior of 37 Lansdowne Road and gymnasium, interior of gymnasium, medical room, lecture room, dining room at 37 Lansdowne Road; tea parties in garden of 17 Lansdowne Road, students in fancy dress and participating in a Punch and Judy show; scenes from Guide Camp, and a view of Margaret Stansfeld's cottage in Pavenham, Bedfordshire.

Outside of the College the album has scenes of tennis at Wimbledon and cricket at Northampton in 1921, non-College hockey teams and matches, and of students and staff at St. Thomas' Hospital, London, including Richard Timberg (b.1871), Head of St. Thomas' physical exercise unit.
