Scope and Content

Green cloth album with the 'Photographs' embossed on front cover containing 75 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1914-1916. Some photographs are captioned.

The images show scenes from life at the College and include the following: students engaged in dance displays (Folk, Sword and Revived Greek Dance Frieze); demonstrating gymnastic positions; Set XII, the cricket, hockey, lacrosse, netball and tennis teams; relaxing in the garden and cycling; the groundsman, Mr Mansfield, tutor, Molly Petit, and the Principal, Margaret Stansfeld; the interiors of the gymnasium, medical room, dining room, teaching room and student bedroom, the garden set out for Demonstration Day 1915.

The album also shows several scenes relating to soldiers stationed in Bedford during the First World War and include wounded soldiers at Kempston Barracks Hospital; students and soldiers participating in silly games; and soldiers from the Welsh Regiment at a 'Sunday Tea' in one of the College gardens. Some soldiers are named.
