Administrative / Biographical History

The Commonwealth Teacher Training Bursary Scheme was established following the first Commonwealth Education Conference held at Oxford in 1959. The purpose of the scheme was to enable a larger number of Commonwealth students to benefit from courses of teacher training in Britain. Bursaries were awarded by the Commonwealth Bursary Unit of the Ministry of Education. In the early 1960s the British Government provided around 400 bursaries each year.
