Gladys Brooke Set VI (1908-1910) Volume II

Scope and Content

Burgundy leather album with 'B.P.T.C. 1908-1910' written on front cover containing 65 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1908-1910. The album was donated by Gladys Brooke of Set VI.

The images show scenes from life at the College and include the following: students playing hockey, lacrosse and netball, engaged in displays of dance; students and staff at picnics and boating on the river Great Ouse; students dressed in theatrical costume for fancy dress dance; 37 Lansdowne Road: the exterior, interior of gymnasium and senior study room; scenes from rural Bedford life. The album is annotated with descriptions of scenes and names of individuals and includes images of dance displays and costumes for the Minuet, Morris Dancing, Sailors Hornpipe, Galliard, Sarabande and Scotch Reels; Reunion Week for 1910 and the skeleton 'Perkings III'.

Loose photographs (10) found in an envelope pasted into the back of this album and the album described in PH 2/5, have been brought together in a separate bundle. All but two are concerned with Bedford Physical Training College. Included in this bundle is a photograph of the teachers and pupils of the S.P.G. (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel) Bengal Girls' School in Smila, India dated October 1913. The names and description of some of the subjects have been written on the reverse of the photograph but in a different hand to that of Gladys Brooke suggesting that the photograph was sent to Brooke.
