Set XLI (1942-1945)

Scope and Content

Brown album with 'Photographs' embossed on cover containing 45 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. It is likely that the album was presented to the College by the students of Set XLI as a record of their time at the College. Individual pages and photographs are captioned with staff named and one student – Margot Spence. The first page of the album carries the signatures of students from Set XLI.

The images show Set XLI; a hockey match; scenes of students contributing to the war effort through acting as firewatchers and assisting with harvesting at a farm in Devon in 1943-1945; students performing a gymnastics display on the Bedford rugby ground on Whit Monday as part of the Bedford 'Wings for Victory' week in June 1943 organised by the Borough Savings Committee, taking picnics, skating at Goldington Green, and relaxing in the garden; views of College gardens, Great Ouse river and Elstow church; schoolchildren taking physical exercise at Goldington Road School; swimming coaches at Bedford High School Swimming Pool; scenes from Ickwell May Day and VE Day in Bedford; Senior students performing dances for their demonstration in the summer of 1945.
