Set XXIII (1924-1927)

Scope and Content

Brown leather album with '1923-1926' inscribed on first page containing 164 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. All of the images have captions describing scenes, activities and naming individuals. Many students from Set XXII are identified. The provenance of the album is not known.

Scenes from College life include the following: students swimming in the Commercial Road Swimming Baths and Newnham Baths, Bedford, engaged in displays of country dancing, Revived Greek Dance and gymnastics – for Demonstration Day 1925 and 1926 –photographs of the Revived Greek Dance and gymnastics are captioned with the name of the tableau and movement respectively; 21st birthday tea parties in the garden; scenes from entertainments The Man with the Bowler Hat , The Romantic Age and The Typical Topical Table (the latter includes a programme pasted into the album; the cricket, hockey, lacrosse, netball and swimming teams; international lacrosse players for 1926; the exterior of 17 and 37 Lansdowne Road, 5 Dynevor Road, and Margaret Stansfeld's cottage at Pavenham and its replacement at Aspley Heath, Bedfordshire; the interior of a lecture room; scenes from a Folk Dance competition held at Lilford Hall, Northamptonshire at which the College competed, and the College Sports Day in 1925.
