Scope and Content

Black album with 'The Cambrian Album' embossed on cover containing 68 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. It is most likely that the album is the creation of a student from Set XXXVII. The photographs are captioned and students are named.

The images show students of Set XXXVII; scenes of students preparing against the threat of bombs and incendiary fires through digging trenches in the garden of 17 Lansdowne Road, filling sandbags, practising fire drill at 29 Lansdowne Road, and standing by the entrance to the air-raid shelter in the garden of 29 Lansdowne Road wearing gas masks; students relaxing in the garden, skating on flooded fields at Goldington, taking picnics; cricket, hockey, lacrosse, netball, swimming and tennis teams; scenes of a swimming demonstration in the indoor Bedford Girls' Modern School Baths in 1939 and students participating in displays of gymnastics and dancing in the garden and gymnasium; views of the netball court and entrance to the gymnasium; schoolchildren taking physical exercise at Priory Street Infant School, Bedfordshire.
