Set XXXV (1936-1939)

Scope and Content

Brown album containing 54 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. It is likely that the album was presented to the College by the students of Set XXXV as a record of their time at the College. Individual pages and photographs are captioned with some staff and students named.

Several pages are grouped into themes and include 'Munich Crisis' showing the building of trenches, a completed air-raid shelter, the release of barrage balloons and collection of items to be taken into a shelter including a gas mask and fire bucket; 'Ickwell May Day 1939' showing schoolchildren dancing around a maypole and the May Queen and her retinue; 'The Day at Northampton' showing children at the Northampton Open Air Special School and a nursery school; 'Classes' showing schoolchildren taking physical exercise at Goldington Green, Harpur Street and Priory Catholic schools in Bedford.

The album also shows images of a trip to Sweden in July 1939 undertaken by five Senior students who were chosen to represent Great Britain in Educational Gymnastics as part of a team drawn from all of the physical training colleges for a festival in Gothenburg.
