Set XV (1917-1919)

Scope and Content

Purple cloth album with 'BPTC' embroidered in gold on cover containing 118 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1917-1919. It is probable that the album was created by members of Set XV and presented to the College. All of the images have captions in a neat and uniform hand describing places, occasions, and naming individual students and staff.

Scenes from life at the College include the following: students playing lacrosse and netball, demonstrating gymnastic positions and performing the high jump; picnics and paddling in the river Great Ouse by students resident at 5 Dynevor Road, skating and having fun in the snow; students of Set XV and some students from Sets XIV and XVI; the Junior cricket, hockey, lacrosse, netball and rounders teams; the groundsman, Mr Mansfield, tutors: Freda Colwill, Ida Hadley, Molly Petit, Cicely Read, and the Principal, Margaret Stansfeld; 37 Lansdowne Road: the exterior, garden, interior of gymnasium and Senior lecture room; 31 Lansdowne Road: exterior of house and interior of Mary Lace's room; 5 Dynevor Road: view of rear of house from garden; view of Lansdowne Road; tea party on Demonstration Day 1919; R31 airship over Bedford.
