Set XXVII (1928-1931)

Scope and Content

Brown suede leather album with 'B.P.T.C. XXVII The Athelstan Album' embossed on cover containing 72 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. It is likely that the album was presented to the Bedford Physical Training College by the students of Set XXVII as a record of their time at the College. All of the images have captions describing scenes and activities. A few members of staff are named but no students from Set XXVII are individually identified.

The images show students relaxing over tea parties, picnics, cycling, boating on the river, spending time at Margaret Stansfeld's cottage at Aspley Heath, Bedfordshire, and ice skating and playing ice hockey; cricket, hockey, lacrosse, netball, swimming and tennis teams; Senior students from Set XXVII participating in The Stansfeld Girls entertainment for Demonstration Day 1931; scenes of coaching, swimming and sunbathing at various swimming pools including Bedford High School Swimming Pool, Commercial Road Baths and Newnham Baths; views of various College buildings including the new laboratory, the garden and orchard, and Lansdowne Road.

The album also contains photographs of Priory Catholic Boys School cricket team, May Day celebrations at Ickwell in 1931, and a visit to Bedford High School Swimming Pool in 1930 by Aileen Riggin (1906-2002), American swimmer and diver and Olympic medallist, for a diving demonstration accompanied by the British Olympic Swimming Team Coach, Mr W. J. Howcroft (1930).
