Scope and Content

Brown cloth album with 'Photographs' embossed on front cover containing 125 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1910-1911. Some photographs are captioned.

The images show scenes from College life and include the following: swimming in the Commercial Road Swimming Baths, playing hockey, lacrosse and tennis, engaged in gymnastics displays and using a vaulting horse demonstrating the Back Rest and Short Fly; boating on the river Great Ouse; students dressed in theatrical costume performing an entertainment or for fancy dress dance; group photograph of lacrosse team; the cricket coach, Mr Rogers; 37 Lansdowne Road: the exterior, garden and study room.

The album is annotated with descriptions of scenes and includes images of 'Morris Partners for High School Entertainment', 'Morris Children from High School', 'Cats and Beans and Barley'; students wearing appropriate costume and pose for the following dances: Cymbal, Fandango, Galliard, Humoresque, Hungarian, Irish Jig, Minuet, Singing Games – Mowing the Barley, Swedish and Tambourine; Summer 1911 picnic excursion from Millbrook to Ampthill; scenes from 1911 Demonstration Day and Holiday Week.
