Set XXXVI (1937-1940)

Scope and Content

Black album containing 91 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. The album was presented to the Principal, Margaret Stansfeld, by the students of Set XXXVI as a record of their time at the College. The final page of the album carries the signatures of students from Set XXXVI. Individual pages and some photographs are captioned but only one student is named – Caroline MacFetridge. Some photographs are missing.

The images show Set XXXVI; scenes from the Bedfordshire National Fitness Display held on 1 July 1939 with gymnastic displays performed by College students; scenes of a swimming demonstration in the indoor Bedford Girls Modern School Baths in 1939 and Senior students from Set XXXVI participating in gymnastics and dancing for Demonstration Day 1940; schoolchildren taking physical exercise at Queens Park Infant School, Goldington Road and Silver Jubilee Schools in Bedford; students dressed in their clinic overalls at London Hospital, Middlesex Hospital and views of the Nurses Home at Middlesex Hospital; students enjoying picnics, preparing sandbags and helping out at a local farm in Stevington, Bedfordshire; scenes of swimming and diving at Bedford High School Swimming Pool.
