Scope and Content

Collection of 35 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1937-1940.

Almost all of the photographs have captions on the reverse and all students appearing in a photograph are named. Staff members identified are Mary Hill 'Bill' and Mary Feaver.

The images show scenes from life at the College and include the following: students outside the Junior Common Room window, revising in the garden outside the laboratory; watching a cricket match and on a picnic; scenes of students digging trenches, filling sandbags and a weekend of haymaking at Stevington; a sequence of images describing the swimming and diving demonstration given at the indoor pool of Bedford Modern School in [July] 1939; scenes from dance demonstrations given in 1938, 1939 and dances titled Peter and the Wolf and Pomp and Circumstance from 1940; gymnastic demonstrations; views of the College covered in thick snow during the winter of 1939-40 and the gardens in summer.
