Set XVIII (1919-1922)

Scope and Content

Black oilcloth album with 'BPTC' written on front cover and names of students from Set XVIII inscribed on inside of front cover. The album contains 82 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1919-1922. It is probable that the album was created by members of Set XVIII and presented to the College. All of the images have captions describing scenes, activities and naming individuals.
Scenes from College life include the following: students swimming at Commercial Road Baths, performing gymnastics in the garden, displays of country dancing, Hungarian Dance, Running Dance and Greek dances; lacrosse team; interior of gymnasium and medical room; students in fancy dress for themed tea parties, enacting a Punch and Judy show, and for the entertainments Nonsense Novels and Cinderpatella (1922); scenes from Holiday Week 1922 including netball and tennis tournaments and a Motor Picnic; excursions to Margaret Stansfeld's cottage at Pavenham, Bedfordshire.
Several students from Set XVIII are identified together with the Principal, Margaret Stansfeld and several staff including tutors: Freda Colwill, Helen McMinn, Molly Petit, Cicely Read, and Elizabeth Roberts.
