Scope and Content

Brown paper album with 'Photographs' inscribed on front cover containing 158 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. The album belonged to Molly Tod of Set XXII who later became a member of staff (1934-1966).
All of the images have captions describing scenes, activities and naming individuals. Several students from Set XXII are identified.
Scenes from College life include the following: students being coached by the British Olympic Swimming Team Coach Mr W. J. Howcroft in the Commercial Road Swimming Baths, Bedford, swimming at Newnham Baths, Bedford; engaged in displays of gymnastics and Revived Greek Dance for Demonstration Day 1926 (the latter have detailed captions naming dance and movements) and folk dancing; scenes from the Senior Play The Typical Topical Table (1926); the cricket, hockey, lacrosse (including players with international honours), netball, swimming and tennis teams; scenes from ice skating at Goldington, Bedfordshire (1925), Demonstration Day 1926, picnicking at the Australia v. Northamptonshire cricket match in Northampton (1926), and birthday parties; Sports Day at the [Convent of the Holy Ghost School, Bedford] and Form I from the school (1925-1926); tutors Freda Colwill, Helen McMinn, Molly Petit, Cicely Read, Elizabeth Roberts, Helen Rowlatt, and the Principal Margaret Stansfeld.
The last four photographs in the album date from the late-1930s and show a modern dance display in a College garden, a rehearsal for a display at the Wembley Festival of Youth held at the Empire Stadium, Wembley on 3 July 1937 and a camouflaged Anderson (air-raid) shelter in a College garden.
