Set XXVIII (1929-1932)

Scope and Content

Brown cardboard album with 'Bedford Physical Training College' and '28th Set' embossed on cover containing 135 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. It is thought that the album was presented to the College by the students of Set XXVIII as a record of their time at the College. Most of the images have captions describing scenes, activities and naming individuals and a couple of pages are decorated with cartoon drawings.

Scenes from College life include the following: students swimming in the Commercial Road Swimming Baths, Newnham Road Baths, and Bedford High School Baths, playing hockey, netball and tennis, engaged in displays of national dances, Revived Greek Dance and gymnastics most probably for a Demonstration Day; lacrosse team; Set XXVIII with legend giving names; students resident at 29 Lansdowne Road; Senior students dressed in theatrical costume for their entertainment Dick Whittington (1932); students entertaining children from Dr. Barnardo's Home, Bedford; Senior students rehearsing for a Physical Education demonstration organised by the Ling Association and held at the Albert Hall on 21 May 1932.

The photographs also show several (named) members of staff; a diving demonstration by Aileen Riggin (1906-2002), American swimmer and diver and Olympic medallist, held at Bedford High School Swimming Pool accompanied by the British Olympic Swimming Team Coach, Mr W. J. Howcroft (1930); May Day celebrations at Ickwell, Bedfordshire and a country dancing festival at Hinwick House, Bedfordshire; Margaret Stansfeld opening the new gymnasium at Bedford High School [23 November 1931]; and Ulise Joseph 'Pete' Desjardins (1907-1985), an American diver and Olympic medallist, at a diving display in London (1931).
