Set XXXIII (1934-1937)

Scope and Content

Brown leather album containing 62 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. It is thought that the album was presented to the College by the students of Set XXXIII as a record of their time at the College. Individual pages are captioned but no students or staff featured in the album are named. Part of the album has been divided into sections titled 'Demonstrations', 'Teams', and 'Ickwell'. The final page of the album carries the signatures of students from Set XXXIII.

The images show students of Set XXXIII; cricket, hockey, lacrosse, netball, swimming and tennis teams; Senior students from Set XXXIII participating in gymnastics and dancing for Demonstration Day 1937, dressed in theatrical costume, and rehearsing for a display at the Wembley Festival of Youth held on 3 July 1937; scenes from May Day celebrations at Ickwell in 1937 including views of Ickwell House and garden (owned by Lieutenant-Colonel George Hayward Wells), participation in dancing around the Maypole, and the May Queen and her retinue; views of Bedford High School Swimming Pool and College houses and gardens in Lansdowne Road.
