Set XXIV (1925-1928)

Scope and Content

Brown leather album with 'Snapshots' embossed on cover containing 83 photographs. The album was presented to Margaret Stansfeld, Principal of Bedford Physical Training College, by the students of Set XXIV as a record of their time at the College. Most of the images have captions describing scenes, activities and naming individuals with several students from Set XXIV identified.

The images show students relaxing over tea parties, picnics, eating Walls ice cream purchased from a vendor in Lansdowne Road, spending time at Margaret Stansfeld's cottage at Aspley Heath, and attending a Guide Rally; 2nd-year students from Set XXIV performing gymnastic movements in the gymnasium as taught by Madame Agnete Bertram, University of Copenhagen who visited the College for a day in the summer of 1927; cricket, hockey, lacrosse (including players with international and territorial honours) and tennis teams; Senior students from Set XXIV participating in demonstrations of Revived Greek Dance, gymnastics and folk dancing for Demonstration Day 1928; students receiving coaching from the British Olympic Swimming Team Coach, Mr W. J. Howcroft, at Newnham Baths and scenes from Commercial Road Baths and Oakley swimming pool; scenes from 'entertainments' performed by students; views of various College buildings including the dining room and conservatory at 37 Lansdowne Road, a student's bedroom, the garden at 35 Lansdowne Road and college houses in Lansdowne Road.

The album also contains photographs of Mrs Bailey Gibson (tennis coach?), Knud Anton Knudsen (1864-1949), a gymnastics inspector, and Niels Bukh (1880-1950), a gymnastics teacher.
