Scope and Content

Brown leather album containing 19 images principally of dancers performing in a ballet produced by Miss Ruby Ginner (1886-1978) in 1929 at the Rudolf Steiner Hall, London and the Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. The grouping or tableau Armies of the Earth and Air , reproduced in The Dancing Times , December 1929, are amongst the images. The album also contains a photograph of a dancer which may have been part of a performance for the Greek Festival of Drama, Folk Song and Dance in Athens held in 1930 and choreographed by Ginner, and a photograph of an unknown woman who may possibly be Ginner herself.
The album belonged to Freda Colwill, a former student of Bedford Physical Training College (1913-1915), who was appointed as the College's first specialist in dance in 1916. It is known that Colwill attended Ginner's summer schools for specialist training in Revived Greek Dance (subsequently known as Classical Greek Dance) in the 1920s. Ginner founded the Association of Teachers of Revived Greek Dance in 1923.
