May Barclay Set XI (1913-1915)

Scope and Content

Grey cloth album with the BPTC logo embossed on front cover containing 81 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1913-1915. The album has been attributed to May Barclay of Set XI.

The images show scenes from life at the College and include the following: students swimming in the Commercial Road Swimming Baths and engaged in dance displays; carrying out massage treatments on young children; tea parties in the garden; group photograph of Set XI, the cricket, hockey, lacrosse, netball and tennis teams; the groundsman Mr Mansfield, tutors: Ida Hadley, Elin Lindelöf, and Elizabeth Roberts; scenes from the interiors of Nos. 29, 31 and 37 Lansdowne Road and 5 Dynevor Road including the gymnasium/medical room and student rooms.

The album is amusingly annotated with descriptions of scenes and names of individuals and includes images of the Kempston Barracks Hospital; Juniors Tea Party and Sports at [Biddenham] Field; students wearing appropriate costume and demonstrating movement for the Princess Royal, Sailors Hornpipe and Scotch Reels; children participating in a physical education lesson at Clapham Road School, Bedford; scenes from Demonstration Day held [1 August] 1914; Blue X Day in Bedford.
