Set XXIX (1930-1933)

Scope and Content

Brown/black leather album with 'Album' embossed on cover containing 137 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. It is thought that the album was presented to the College by the students of Set XXIX as a record of their time at the College. Individual pages are captioned but no students or staff featured in the album are named.

The images show students of Set XXIX; students relaxing over tea parties, purchasing ice-creams from a Walls ice-cream seller, spending time at Margaret Stansfeld's cottage at Aspley Heath, Bedfordshire and performing acrobatics in the garden; cricket, hockey, lacrosse, netball, swimming and tennis teams; Senior students from Set XXIX participating in gymnastics, National and Greek Revived Dance and performing an entertainment for Demonstration Day 1933; scenes of coaching, swimming and diving at Bedford High School Swimming Pool and Commercial Road Baths; views of various College buildings including the new laboratory (built in 1930) and gardens, and the interior of the medical room.

The album also shows a group of students at St. Thomas' Hospital, London and a group of children from Barnardo's, possibly from the Barnardo's children's home – Howard House in Bedford.
