Florence Cowburn Set X (1912-1914)

Scope and Content

Loose pages (23) from an album containing 120 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years circa 1912-1914. Many photographs in the album carry inscriptions in a neat and uniform hand and it is thought that the album was created by Florence Cowburn from Set X.

The images show scenes from life at the College and include the following: students swimming in the Commercial Road Swimming Baths, playing cricket and tennis, engaged in dance and gymnastics displays, and on excursions and picnics in the countryside; the hockey, lacrosse and netball teams; the cricket coach, Mr Rogers, tutors: Miss Moon, Molly Petit, Elizabeth Roberts, and the Principal, Margaret Stansfeld; 37 Lansdowne Road: the exterior, garden, interior of old gymnasium (medical room) and new gymnasium, Junior study and Senior study rooms; 29 Lansdowne Road: exterior and interior of student bedroom; exterior of 5 Dynevor Road; children participating in physical education lessons at Queens Park School; scenes from Bedford life including the countryside and scenes showing stages in the construction of the Bedford Purification Sewage Works. It is understood that Bedford Physical Training College students visited Bedford Water Works in preparation for the Royal Sanitary Institute examination.

The album is annotated with descriptions of scenes and names of individual staff and students and includes scenes from Demonstration Days for 1913 and 1914; students engaged in dance demonstrations for the Bourée, Daleroze, Passepied and Swedish dances; and a group of Bedford Territorials marching through the town.
