Freda Waters Set XIII (1915-1917)

Scope and Content

Loose pages (11) from a photograph album containing 86 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1915-1916. The paper front cover is titled 'College Photographs' and dated 3 June 1916. The album was donated by Freda Waters of Set XIII. Many of the photographs carry inscriptions. Several students are identified but using their first name only.

The images show scenes from life at the College and include the following: students playing hockey (against a male team, most likely an Officers Team from the No. 1 School of Instruction at Elstow, Bedfordshire) and tennis, engaged in dance displays, wearing appropriate costume and demonstrating movement for the Morris and Sword dances; picnics and boating on the river Great Ouse, tea parties in the garden; group photograph of Set XIII, the Junior and Senior hockey teams for 1916; the groundsman Mr Mansfield, tutors: Freda Colwill, Ida Hadley, Elin Lindelöf, Molly Petit, Elizabeth Roberts, and the Principal Margaret Stansfeld; 37 Lansdowne Road: the exterior, garden and interior of the dining room and gymnasium/medical room; 29 Lansdowne Road: the exterior and garden; garden of 5 Dynevor Road; Commercial Road swimming baths; 'Perkins' the skeleton.
