Administrative / Biographical History

A Centre of Excellence in Women's Lacrosse, Hockey and Cricket was established at Bedford College of Higher Education in late 1977. The creation of Centres of Excellence was provided for in the parliamentary White Paper 'Sport and Recreation' published in August 1975 in which universities and colleges were encouraged to participate in the scheme. Centres of Excellence were initially grant aided by the Sports Council through Regional Sports Councils but were expected to develop alternative sources of funding.
