Scope and Content

Series of 33 b/w postcards depicting various people and events at Bedford Physical Training College.

Subjects include an unidentified person in a College garden; individual and groups of students demonstrating gymnastic and Modern Dance poses at night in the 'New Room', most likely taken for a College-run photographic competition on the theme of 'motion'; students in a College garden (a) holding aloft a balance beam on top of which is a student striking a gymnastic pose and (b) performing a Modern Dance demonstration, most likely a rehearsal for Demonstration Day and performed by Senior students; images relating to the Festival of Youth held at the Empire Stadium, Wembley on 3 July 1937 including rehearsals and the actual demonstration; scenes from the Bedfordshire National Fitness Display held on 1 July 1939 in Russell Park, Bedford including gymnastic displays performed by Bedford Physical Training College students; students on the back of a lorry at a farm in Evesham, Bedfordshire in August 1940; students in a College garden rehearsing a gymnastics display for the 'Wings for Victory' mass demonstration held at Bedford rugby ground in June 1943.
