Set XXXVI (1937-1940)

Scope and Content

Loose pages (15) from an album containing 63 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. It is most likely that the album is the creation of a student from Set XXXVI. Most of the pages and photographs are captioned and some students and staff are named. These include the tennis coach, Miss Doyle, tutors Mary Lace, Molly Tod and Joan Goodrich and Mary Hill (referred to as 'JOGS' and 'Bill' respectively in the album). Several images are missing.

The majority of the images appear to date from 1940 and show scenes of students contributing to the war effort through assisting with the fruit harvest at a farm in Evesham, Bedfordshire in August 1940 – several of the images are captioned with different stages of the fruit picking process and members of the farming (?) family are identified; scenes from a school teaching practice showing schoolchildren taking midday rest at Jubilee School and a rounders match at [Bedford High School]; a remedial clinic in the College garden; swimming at Bedford High School Swimming Pool; students enjoying a picnic by the river, sunbathing and haymaking; Senior students performing gymnastics (in the gymnasium and garden) - with positions and movements captioned - and dances titled Peter and the Wolf and Pomp and Circumstance for their demonstration in the summer of 1940 – the Peter and the Wolf images have been tinted with colour.
