Set XVI (1917-1920)

Scope and Content

Grey suede album with 'Set XVI' and 'Photographs' embossed on cover containing 102 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1919-1920. It is probable that the album was created by members of Set XVI and presented to the College. Presentation of the photographs is thematic with separate pages for staff, buildings, events, excursions, etc. Staff are named but not students.

Scenes from life at the College include the following: students swimming at Commercial Road Swimming Baths and demonstrating movements for Revived Greek Dance; picnics and paddling in the river Great Ouse, skating at Goldington, Bedfordshire and having fun in the snow; the 1st cricket, hockey and lacrosse teams; Set XVI (1917-1920); exterior of gymnasium, interior of medical room, dining room at 37 Lansdowne Road, Senior Common Room, exterior and interior of new lecture room (also known as Senior lecture room), the gardens 17, 29, 37 Lansdowne Road and 5 Dynevor Road; scenes from entertainments The Bathroom Door and Gertrude The Governess ; scenes from Sports on Peace Day 1919, birthday tea parties, a visit to a Guide Camp (showing students seated in a charabanc) and Demonstration Day 1920.
