June Abbott Set XXXV (1936-1939)

Scope and Content

Brown leather album containing 119 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. It is thought the album belonged to June Abbott of Set XXXV. Individual pages and photographs are captioned and a group photograph of staff and students has been carefully cut up and pasted into the album with each individual named.

The images show views of College buildings and gardens and the interior of the medical room, Senior study room and small lecture room; scenes from cricket, netball and lacrosse matches; scenes of swimming and diving in the indoor Bedford Girls' Modern School Baths; the exterior of several Bedford schools: Ampthill Road, Goldington Road, Clapham Road, Jubilee, Harpur Street, Bedford Girls Modern, Priory Street, Pearcy Road, Queens Park and St. Andrews; views of Bedford; 'The Crisis 28 September 1939' showing the building of trenches and collection of items to be taken into a shelter including a gas mask and fire bucket; 'Ickwell May Day 1939' showing schoolchildren dancing around a maypole and Ickwell House; scenes from Northampton Open Air Special School and a Northampton nursery school; schoolchildren taking physical exercise at Queens Park Infant School and Priory Street School; scenes from Empire Air Display held at Cardington on 28 May 1938; scenes from the Festival of Youth held at the Empire Stadium, Wembley on 3 July 1937 and rehearsals in the College gardens and playing field; scenes from the Bedfordshire National Fitness Display held on 1 July 1939 with gymnastic displays performed by College students; scenes from the making of an educational film on dancing by Gaumont British Picture Corporation at their studios in London using 2nd and 3rd-year students from Bedford Physical Training College.

Inserted in an envelope at the back of the album are Students' Demonstration Programmes for the years 1937-1939.
