Personal album of Mary Victoria Lace Set XV student (1917-1919) & tutor (1922-1950) Volume III

Scope and Content

Blue oilcloth album with 'Reminiscences' embossed on front cover. Mary Victoria Lace (d.1950) became a member of staff in 1922 until her death in 1950. The album contains 102 photographs and is predominantly personal photographs of family, friends, and holiday snaps from August 1919 to July 1921, with only a few of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for June-July 1919. All of the images have captions describing places, occasions, naming individuals and dates.

Scenes from life at the College include the interior of Mary Lace's room at 31 Lansdowne Road, group photograph of Set XV and various activities held on Demonstration Day 1919 including the following: students playing netball, participating in the high jump and 'Dressing Race', tea party in the garden of 37 Lansdowne Road, demonstrating gymnastic positions, and costumed performers and a stage set for Scene 1 of an 'Eastern Entertainment'.

Outside of the College, the album has a series of images of a dance festival held at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1919 and the English Folk Dance Society Demonstration held at Cheltenham in 1920; scenic views of Bath, Brendon, Bristol, Cumbria, Exmoor, Guernsey, Sark and Somerset; students and staff at St. Thomas' Hospital, London, where Mary Lace undertook further training in Massage, Medical Gymnastics and Electricity following completion of her studies at Bedford – includes a photograph of Richard Timberg (b.1871), Head of St. Thomas' physical exercise unit. The album also contains an unidentified silhouette but which is presumed to be that of Mary Lace.
