Administrative / Biographical History

The Central Council of Recreative Physical Training (as it was called until 1943) was founded in April 1935 by Phyllis Colson (1904-1972), a former student of Bedford Physical Training College (1923-1926). It served as an umbrella organisation to pioneer, stimulate and co-ordinate opportunities for young people to participate in every kind of physical activity. In December 2010 CCPR became known as the Sport and Recreation Alliance, an independent organisation for the national governing and representative bodies of sport and recreation in the United Kingdom.
