Scope and Content

Brown ribbed paper album with BPTC logo inscribed on cover containing 200 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1918-1921. It is likely that the album was created by a student (Janet Coutts?) of Set XVII. Very few of the images have captions.

Scenes from life at the College include the following: students swimming at Commercial Road Swimming Baths, playing netball, lacrosse and tennis, demonstrating gymnastics; picnics and paddling in the river Great Ouse, skating at Goldington, Bedfordshire and having fun in the snow; hockey and lacrosse teams; group photograph of Set XVII; exterior and garden of 5 Dynevor Road, interior of gymnasium, medical room, dining room at 37 Lansdowne Road, the gardens of 29 and 31 Lansdowne Road; scenes from entertainments Outside The Bathroom Door and Gertrude The Governess ; scenes from Sports on Peace Day held 19 July 1919, birthday tea parties, and a visit to Hitchin Girls School. Students Marjorie Allen (Set XVII), Catherine Batholomew (Set IX), Helen Leslie (Set XVI) and Hilda Millen (Set XVI) are identified together with several staff including the groundsman Mr Mansfield, tutors Freda Colwill, Ida Hadley, Miss E. Johansson, Elin Lindelöf, Molly Petit, Cicely Read, Elizabeth Roberts, and the Principal Margaret Stansfeld.
