Set XVII (1918-1921)

Scope and Content

Brown leather album with 'BPTC XVII Set' embossed on front cover containing 111 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1918-1921. It is probable that the album was created by members of Set XVII and presented to the College. None of the photographs are captioned.

Scenes from life at the College include the following: students swimming and diving in the Commercial Road Swimming Baths; playing netball, demonstrating gymnastic positions, country dancing and Revived Greek Dance friezes; participating in a large-scale gymnastic display in a playing field; picnics, boating and paddling in the river Great Ouse, relaxing in the garden; students of Set XVII; the cricket, lacrosse and netball teams; the cricket coach, Mr Rogers; interior of gymnasium, student bedrooms and teaching room; students dressed in their massage therapy overalls; young children in one of the College gardens – possibly 'patients' for massage therapy; group of schoolboys in a school yard, possibly Goldington Road School.

The album also contains scenes from a Guide Camp and includes Cicely Read and some students in Guide uniform.
