Set XXXVIII (1939-1942)

Scope and Content

Black album containing 63 photographs of Bedford Physical Training College students participating in college life. It is likely that the album was presented to the College by the students of Set XXXVIII as a record of their time at the College. Individual pages are captioned but no staff or students are named.

The images show cricket, hockey and netball matches; scenes of students preparing against the threat of bombs through filling sandbags and contributing to the war effort through assisting with the harvest at a farm; students taking picnics and dressed as characters from Pinocchio ; scenes of coaching in the indoor Bedford Girls' Modern School Baths; view of College gardens and the interior of a student room; visit of 'Brains Trust' to the College in 1942. Over a third of the images are of the Senior students performing the ballet Peter Pan for their dance demonstration in the summer of 1942.
