Scope and Content

The writer of the manuscript is not known and there is no record of the circumstances of itscreation. It appears to be a copy made of lectures recorded or published elsewhere rather than by astudent who was present at lectures given by Herman Boerhaave.

Administrative / Biographical History

Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738) was a Dutch physician, chemist and humanist. He is credited withbeing the founder of clinical teaching and the modern hospital. Amongst his many medical treatises,he wrote 'Institutiones Medicinae' (1708) and 'Elementa Chemiae' (1732).

Custodial History

The volume was once part of Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Book Society, a library founded in 1828and actively maintained until the early 20th century. The core collection was purchased by TheUniversity of Nottingham in 1971 with another substantial part of the collection discovered andacquired in 1973. The collection comprises some 1160 volumes and it remained physically in theUniversity's Medical Library until 1994 when it was transferred to the Department of Manuscripts andSpecial Collections. This volume was transferred to the manuscript and archive collection of thedepartment in March 1997.
