Scope and Content

Despite the above title, only one item in this section concerns the Overseers of Chipping Norton, namely PAR64/5/A1/1, a book containing valuable summaries of many Poor Law documents, including on removals, settlements, bastardy cases and apprenticeships.

All the other items in this section concern the Overseers of Over Norton, and came from the Huckvale papers (see the Introduction to this catalogue). These papers are very extensive, including settlement, removal, bastardy and apprenticeship papers, as well as general accounts, a lease of Over Norton Workhouse and an unusually extensive collection of assessments for various taxes from the late 18th century.

Further information on Chipping Norton may be found in PAR64/2/A1/1 above, which not only includes notes on the elections of Overseers there in the 18th century, but also detailed inventories made of the Workhouse there between 1741 and 1759.
