Anthony Hobson studied at Leicester College of Art. During the Second World War he was an RAF pilot, serving in South Africa and after the war he continued to fly planes with the RAF Volunteer Reserve.
Back in England Hobson completed his studies at the Leicester College of Art and became interested in the study of art history. While a Polytechnic Head of Department he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy for his thesis on the Victorian painter J.W.Waterhouse. Hobson was an Honorary Research Fellow of Coventry University and was in demand as a lecturer both there and at Warwick University. He also painted life-size portraits including the series of Provincial Grand Masters at Edgebaston, Birmingham, and celebrated players in the Tennis Court at Lord's. He also painted still life, figures and aircraft subjects. Hobson died in May 2001. Publications include The Art and Life of J.W.Waterhouse RA 1814-1917, Studio Vista and J.W.Waterhouse, Phaidon. Christie's. 1989.
