Administrative / Biographical History

This collection is divided into two parts. The first part of the collection was put together by James Adamson , who was a photographer in Rothesay, on the Isle of Bute, Scotland. He took ship portraits dating from the 1880s  , and is one of the most comprehensive collections of sailing and steam ship photographs for the period. Most of the pictures were taken just after the ships were built. The second part of the collection is made up of photogrpahs taken by the photographer William Robertson of Gourock, Scotland. He took photographs of various scenes in Gourock, Greenock and in West Renfrewshire between the 1880s-1930s  .
