Scope and Content

Administrative / Biographical History

This large, leather-bound ledger arrived in the Brynmor Jones Library in 1974 as just one item in the very large deposit of solicitors papers catalogued as DDCV from Crust Todd and Mills of Beverley. It represents the transactions of T Straker of Hall Garth Brewery over a 14 year period 1853-1867 and provides valuable evidence about the brewing industry in a small market town. It also provides information about the consumption of many Beverley households who had accounts with T Straker, mostly for ale and beer, but also for brandy and, to a smaller extent, gin, wine and sherry.
