Papers of Professor Frederick Challenger (1887-1983), Professor of Chemistry at LeedsUniversity, 1908-1978

The collection comprises two volumes containing off-prints of published articles by ProfessorChallenger. The volumes were compiled by Professor Challenger in 1954 and primarily concern theperiod 1908-1954. Occasional later items include an article written in 1978. The papers for the mostpart look at the preparation, derivatives, interaction and substitution of various organic chemicalcompounds. Exceptions include 'Frederic Stanley Kipping 1863-1949' (1951), 'The Chemistry Departmentof the University of Leeds' (1953), and an obituary of Andrew Jamieson Walker (1873-1935) (MS740/1);

Challenger's research into the work of Professor F.S. Kipping is recorded in correspondence andphotocopied papers, 1951-1975 (MS 740/2).

Frederick Challenger was born in 1887 and was educated at Derby Technical College and UniversityCollege Nottingham. He was awarded a University of London B.Sc. degree in Chemistry in 1907.Challenger undertook research with Professor F.S. Kipping at University College Nottingham from 1908to 1910. He then studied at Gottingen, Germany, under Professor O. Wallach, who won the Nobel prizefor Chemistry in 1910. Challenger was awarded his doctorate from Gottingen in 1912 and in the sameyear became assistant lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Birmingham. His career subsequentlytook him to the University of Manchester (1915), and then Leeds University where he became Professorof Organic Chemistry in 1930. On his retirement in 1953 he returned to Nottingham, where he retainedactive contacts in the academic world. He died in 1983.
