Administrative / Biographical History

George Howard Gibbs was born in 1889 and died in 1969. During the First World War he served with the 1st Canadian Division and Royal Dublin Fusiliers (1914-1919).

In 1920 Gibbs entered the Colonial Administrative Service. He was posted to the Gold Coast where he held the posts of Assistant District Commissioner (August 1920) and District Commissioner (1925). In 1942 he was transferred to [Rhodesia] as Chief Commissioner of the Northern Territories (1942-1946). Gibbs was awarded the Military Cross and CMG (1944).
