Administrative / Biographical History
The Monotype Casters and Typefounders' Society was was founded as the Amalgamated Typefounders' Trade Society in 1889. It adopted the name Monotype Casters and Typefounders' Society in 1937. It catered for monotype caster operatives, other typecaster operatives and workers in any branch of the typefounding industry. In 1962 it joined the National Union of Printing, Bookbinding and Paper Workers.

Custodial History
The archive of the Monotype Casters and Typefounders' Society was transferred to the Modern Records Centre on the 11th and 12th April 1994 from the National Museum of Labour History. It was accompanied by the archive of the National Society of Operative Printers, Graphical and Media Personnel. Both have been deposited in the Centre on indefinite loan by the National Museum of Labour History/Graphical, Paper and Media Union.
