Administrative / Biographical History
John Mathieson Nairn was born in Dundee, the son of William Nairn, merchant. He trained as an engineer, working in Glasgow, and later at sea on one of the Anchor Line steamers. After returning to Dundee he was employed by Messrs David Low & Co at Ann Street Works, rising to manager, and in 1898, on the death of David Low, he became sole proprietor of the company. Nairn was elected a town councillor in 1899, serving on several committees, and later became a magistrate. In addition, he was an office bearer of Hilltown UF Church and president of the Dundee Horticultural Society. He died on 22 October 1919 at the age of 62.
