Scope and Content

The papers of the Maternity Alliance (Trust) Management Committee (later, Council of Trustees) run from the inaugural meeting on 9 Jun 1983 to Nov 2002. Initially meetings were held every month, except August, and the Management Committee took office on the first meeting after the Annual General Meeting. Members of the Maternity Alliance (Trust) Management Committee were Directors of the Maternity Alliance Company. Officers of the Management Committee and one or more Management Committee members made up the Finance & General Purposes Committee. In later years the numbers of meetings went down to 8 per year, and then to 5 in 2001, usually in the morning before an Executive Committee meeting. In November 2001 the name of the committee changed to the Council of Trustees.

Minutes, many of which are signed, show a non-static agenda. Key items: those present and in attendance; apologies for absence; minutes of the previous Management Committee meeting; Co-ordinator's Report; Staff Report (from July 1987: covering campaigning work of the MA, information, education activities and administration of the organisation); minutes of monthly Finance & General Purposes Committee Meetings (largely financial statements, budgets and fundraising programmes); work in progress, with feedback from MA working groups and proposals for studies to be undertaken; programmes of work/timetables for events and publications; staff recruitment; papers for Annual General Meetings. Approximately once a year the committee papers contain a list of MA Advisor Members, with their dates of retirement.

Minutes of MA Working Groups, the Trades Union Working Group, the Black and Ethnic Minorities Working Group (later the Minority Ethnic Community Working Group), the Disability Working Group (from 1988) and the Legal Working Group (from 1993) are attached for information and discussion at meetings up to 1995. From 1995 these groups gave oral feedback at the MC meetings and so were reported only in the minutes.

From c.1998 the reports from Working Groups were no longer agenda items.
