Disability Working Group papers

Scope and Content

The papers of the Maternity Alliance Disability Working Group run from Nov 1988 to Sep 1999. The inaugural meeting was on 3 Nov 1988, the group's terms of reference being to advise on all aspects of MA's work so that it should be relevant to people with disabilities; to alert MA to issues that the organisation should be addressing; to ensure that issues relevant to parents with disabilities were promoted in MA's work. The group aimed to represent parents and prospective parents with physical, sensory and learning difficulties. Attached to an invitation to the first meeting is a list of organisations invited to participate. Meetings were to be held quarterly.

Minutes show a non-static agenda. Key items: those present and in attendance; apologies for absence; minutes of the previous meeting; policy issues; reports from DWG members representing different organisations about the work they were doing; reportback from the MA Management Committee. From 1994 the DWG became involved as an advisory panel for the journal 'Disability, Pregnancy and Parenthood International' (DPPI), which becomes a regular agenda item. Copies of minutes from other MA committees included with meeting papers have been removed.
