Trades Union Working Party papers

Scope and Content

The papers of the Maternity Alliance Trades Union Working Party (TUWP) run from Dec 1982 to Feb 2002. The 'Trade Union Consultative Working Party' had its first meeting on 9 Dec 1982, its terms of reference being 'to give advice on the dissemination of material to employees and employers' and to work for 'improved parental agreements in the provision of health care services for employees, [in] terms and conditions of employment by undertaking research, educational and campaigning activities'. Meetings were to be held quarterly, though intervals between meetings were occasionally longer. The group changed its name to 'Trades Union Working Party' in May 1984. Topics regularly discussed included employment rights, pay and benefits for pregnant women and new mothers; health and safety regulations; proposed legislation from the UK and from the European Union affecting women/

Minutes show a non-static agenda. Key items: those present and in attendance; apologies for absence; minutes of the previous meeting; policy issues; reports from unions and TUCs; reportbacks from MA Management Committee and from TUWP members. From 1993, when the Legal Working Group was formed, the agendas include a reportback from that committee.

Documents for discussion at TUWP meetings which are duplicated in the Management Committee papers have been removed, as have copies of minutes from other MA committees.
