Finance & General Purposes Committee papers

Scope and Content

The papers of the Finance & General Purposes Committee (F&GPC) run from Feb 1982 to Aug 2003. It is not clear when the committee was first established. The F&GPC appears to have met approximately every month except August, though dates were often changed and meetings cancelled after papers had gone out; later they were held every other month. For a few years from Nov 1986 two different F&GPC meetings were held on the same day, one for the Trust F&GPC, and one for the Company F&GPC, with separate agendas and minutes, although later only a Trust F&GPC meeting was held.

Minutes, some of which are signed, show a non-static agenda. Key items included those present and in attendance; apologies for absence; minutes of the previous F&GPC meeting; banking and finance; fundraising reports; end of year financial reviews; annual budgets; preparations for Annual General Meetings. Matters relating to accommodation - the MA premises, agreements with its landlords and searches for new buildings - were dealt with by the F&GPC. In later years a Confidential Officers' Meeting was a regular agenda item, held when required.

Also included with the F&GPC papers is a single set of minutes of the third meeting of the Anti-Racism Subgroup on 16 Jul 1986, the only papers of this subcommittee to survive. In Nov 1993 the F&GPC established a Marketing and Fundraising Subcommittee (MFSC), which met just before the main committee.
