Patten Collection, World War, 1939-1945.

Scope and Content

The majority of the collection consists of pamphlets issued by the UK government ministries and other parties during World War II. These informed the public, members of the forces and volunteers on how to cope on rations, what to do in an air raid etc. The collection is mainly pamphlets but also contains magazines, newspapers for the troops, sheet music from the time and various ephemera.

Administrative / Biographical History

The collection was gathered by Mr. P. Patten of Preston who donated the collection to Lancaster University Library around 2000. It was a collection of mainly pamphlets gathered pertaining to the period 1939-1945 providing information to the public. There were also magazines, sheet music and newspapers and newsletters sent to the troops during this period.

Arrangement

The pamphlets have been arranged in alphabetical order under the author's name. The sheet music has been arranged alphabetically by title and the magazines and newspaper/newsletters arranged chronologically.

Access Information

Viewed by appointment only stating what it is you wish to see as the collection is too large to browse. Items can be then used in Special Collections at a pre-arranged time. The pamphlets are listed within the library catalogue and the rest is listed. A list of holdings can be provided by enquiring with Special Collections.

Donation from Mr. P. Patten around the year 2000 from his personal collection.

Fair dealing copying under CLA terms may be done for private use and study only. Much of this collection is under crown copyright and now going out of copyright. Requests for reproductions would need to be done on a case by case basis.
