Includes letters with enclosures from John Elphinstone, 13th Lord Elphinstone in India concerning the Revenue Settlement and the Indian Mutiny, 14 Oct 1855-c 22 Oct 1858. Enclosures include a summary of events taken from official accounts which have reached Bombay up to 11 June 1857; a translation of the proclamation addressed to native soldiers; the Delhi Gazette Extra, 21 Oct 1857; printed papers relating to answers concerning the military and police force in Bombay, 22 September 1858; The Homeward Mail, 12 June 1858; and a minute from the Revenue Commissioner to the Chief Secretary to Government, 22 October 1858. Also includes a letter from Hay M Erskine dated 26 May 1857 at Sinula, a letter from George Loch and draft letters by Mountstuart Elphinstone. The front note implies that there should be a letter from John Elphinstone, 13th Lord Elphinstone dated 8 January 1859, which is not present in this file
