Administrative / Biographical History

In the early 1900s Pietro Fazzi came over from Italy to Scotland to help run a friend‰??s cafÌ© in Motherwell. He was joined by his brothers Guiseppe and Angelo in 1920 and they ran their own cafÌ©. As the ice-cream trade was affected by the General Strike in 1926, they decided to experiment with importing Italian food. This venture was successful due to the large Italian community throughout the West of Scotland. In 1926  they opened their first premises in Maxwell Street, before quickly moving to 230/232 Clyde Street. In 1933  the firm was incorporated to become Fazzi Brothers Ltd . When Italy entered the war in 1940 the three Fazzi brothers were interned. They signed over control of the company to a Glasgow-born employee, Joseph Biagioni. After the war the ownership of the business was restored to the Fazzi brothers and Biagioni was invited to be a co-director/secretary. Pietro retired in 1958, Guiseppe in 1964 and Angelo in 1973, making way for their sons, Roberto and Carlo and son-in-law, Lucio Sarti. From 1963 all deliveries were made by the firm‰??s own vehicles. In 1973 a new branch was opened at 91 Cambridge Street, which moved in the early 1980s to larger premises at 67 Cambridge Street. In 1987 these premises were converted into an Italian-style cafÌ©-bar and a delicatessen counter. In July 1990 a new CafÌ©-Bar and Delicatessen was opened in Newton Mearns. Sandro Sarti was appointed to the Board in 1986 when his father, Lucio retired, while Roberto was appointed managing director. In 1989 Carlo became managing director while Roberto became non-executive chairman. In 1990 Roberto was restored to managing director after Carlo resigned and Lucio Sarti‰??s youngest son, Piero, was made a director. Marco, a nephew of Roberto was appointed to the board in 1991. The firm went into receivership in 1992  .
